Army Names Commander for New Installation Management Command
October 23, 2006
The U.S. Army announced Oct. 23 that Lt. Gen. Robert Wilson, the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management will be the commander of the new Installation Management Command (IMCOM). The activation ceremony will be Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m. in the Pentagon Courtyard.
Wilson will retain his position as Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management on the Army staff and will report directly to the Chief of Staff of the Army as IMCOM commander. As IMCOM commander, Wilson will serve a dual role as the Army’s single authority and primary provider of base support services while also being responsible for providing effective garrison support of mission activities.
The Army announced the establishment of the Installation Management Command in August of this year to improve its ability to provide critical support programs to Soldiers and their families while ensuring its installations are “flagships of readiness.” Over one third of the Army will be restationed as a result of base realignment and closure (BRAC), Global Defense Posture Realignment (GDPR), and transformation of the Army to a modular force.
As former Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, and prior commander of the 7th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, Colorado, Wilson brings a wealth of experience to the new command.
The new command, most of which is currently based in Virginia and Maryland, will relocate to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, in accordance with the Base Realignment and Closure process. The Army staff functions will remain at the Pentagon.
During the activation ceremony, the Army Environmental Center will be re-designated Army Environmental Command and the U.S. Army Community and Family Support Center (CFSC) will be re-designated Family and MWR Command (FMWRC) -- subordinate commands -- under Installation Management Command. The new Installation Management Command will consolidate the current four Installation Management Agency regions within the United States into just two -- to be located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and Fort Eustis, Va.
Wilson, a veteran of Vietnam and the first Iraq War, said that while the new organization will most likely be smaller than the current structure, it will be an organization that is “committed to improving Soldier and family readiness.”
This initiative is part of Army efforts to reorganize its commands and specified headquarters to obtain the most efficient command and control structures to support its Modular Force.
Other leadership changes include the former IMA director, Brig. Gen. John A. Macdonald, who will become IMCOM’s deputy commander.
