Gunmen Kill 8 Afghan Workers at US Base in Afghanistan
20 October 2006
Police in Afghanistan say gunmen have killed eight Afghan civilians working at a remote U.S. military base in the eastern part of the country.
Authorities say the attackers ambushed a car carrying a group of workers as the group left the base in the mountainous Korangal area of eastern Kunar province late Thursday.
Elsewhere, police say an Afghan soldier was killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up near an Afghan army convoy Friday, near the eastern city of Khost. Five soldiers and three civilians were wounded in the attack.
Pro-Taleban and al-Qaida insurgents have been operating throughout eastern Afghan regions bordering Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Canada is increasing pressure on its NATO allies to re-deploy their troops already in Afghanistan to southern provinces where commanders say fighting against Taleban insurgents has been more intense than expected.
Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay said Thursday that Canadian troops need more support if they are to provide the kind of security environment needed for the other parts of NATO's mission, such as reconstruction and development.
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said Thursday some countries have responded to a NATO plea for more troops for Afghanistan, but the alliance had not reached its goal yet.
