MISAWA, Japan (NNS) -- A ceremony was conducted this fall to formally stand up the Command of Mobile Mine Assembly Unit Twelve (MOMAU 12).
Formerly MOMAU 12 was a detachment of Commander Mobile Mine Assembly Group, Corpus Christi, Texas. This ceremony marked the increase in mission and the area of responsibility (AOR) the unit now has as of fiscal year 2006.
MOMAU 12, formerly referred to as Mobile Mine Assembly Detachment 12 (MOMAD12), acted solely as an undersea mine component stockpile maintenance facility. Now they are responsible for both maintaining that same stockpile of mine equipment, and directly supporting all inter-national multi-service sea mining exercises in Japan.
According to Chief Warrant Officer Arch Bly, commanding officer of MOMAU 12, the command is now expecting about a 20 percent increase in personnel.
“MOMAU 12 has for many years conducted business identical to similar mine assembly units with the exception of exercise support. However, it was not a unit unto itself, but a detachment of our immediate superior in command (ISIC),” Bly said. “We will now be able to operate independently without relying directly on our ISIC or host command for basic essentials such as awards.”
Another significant change to note is that Bly’s title changed from officer in charge to commanding officer which he says is the most significant milestone in his career.
“Twenty-four years ago I never dreamed I would be the commanding officer of any unit in the Navy,” he said. “All Naval officers aspire to attain this position I now have and I owe this prestigious trust placed upon me to those senior officers who have directly impacted my ability to lead, direct and manage all while placing ordnance on target.”
