Violence in Baghdad Kills 19 Iraqis

12 October 2006

Iraqi authorities say at least 19 people were killed in separate attacks in Baghdad this Thursday morning.

Police say gunmen raided the offices of a new Iraqi satellite television station, Shaabiya, in eastern Baghdad. Managers at the television station say at least 11 guards and employees were killed.

It was one of the biggest single attacks on Iraqi media, which are frequently targeted by insurgent groups.

Elsewhere in Baghdad, at least eight people were killed and many others wounded in a series on bomb blasts.

Sectarian and insurgent violence has been continuing in the Iraqi capital, despite a major security crackdown in the city.

On Wednesday, at least three bombs exploded in different parts of Baghdad, killing four people.

Also, the Iraqi parliament approved a law that would allow the country's 18 provinces to hold referendums on forming federal regions. Sunni Arabs fear the plan could break up the country, leaving them with resource-poor central and western Iraq.

Separately, in the genocide trial of Saddam Hussein, the court heard testimony from three Kurdish witnesses Wednesday.

Saddam and his cousin, Ali Hassan al-Majid, also known as Chemical Ali, are accused of genocide in the Anfal campaign, which prosecutors say killed more than 180,000 Kurds.

Five other defendants are accused of crimes against humanity. All face the death penalty.
