Press Availability with Secretary Rumsfeld and Prime Minister of Iceland Geir Haarde from the Pentagon

Q Mr. Secretary -- a question from the Icelandic press? I just want to know why over the years -- I understand you've been keen to move the U.S. military forces away from Iceland. Why?

SEC. RUMSFELD: Well, I wouldn't put it that way. What I've been -- what the President asked to have done when he came into office was to shift the U.S. military capabilities from a Cold War posture to the 21st century posture. And that has involved moving forces around from many, many countries. And it's always hard to have changes. But we are so positive on the relationship we have, the long relationship, with Iceland -- some 65 years, and have a great appreciation for the critical importance Iceland's played during the Cold War. And we just had a very fine meeting with the prime minister and the other ministers to fashion the relationship for the 21st century as they go forward.

Nice to see you.

Q Thank you.
