Leaders of Nepal's ruling alliance said they were optimistic of reaching an understanding with the Maoists on key issues like arms management, the position of the king and approval of an interim constitution during talks with the rebels on Tuesday.

A day after marathon parleys with the Maoists that lasted for over eight hours, central bodies of the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML held separate meetings and discussed various key issues related to the peace initiatives, a media report quoting sources said.

"We have evaluated the progress made during yesterday's high- level talks between the seven-party alliance and the CPN-Maoist leadership and informed our party colleagues about its outcome," said Amrit Bohara, CPN-UML standing committee member.

"Yesterday's meeting was positive and progress was made in various aspects during talks with the Maoists," he added.

He said there was a possibility an understanding will be reached with the Maoists tomorrow on key issues, including the position of the king, an interim constitution and a final date for constituent assembly polls.

"The Maoists appeared to be flexible on the issue of arms management," Nepal Sadbhavana Party's General Secretary Rajendra Mahato said, adding that the rebels had agreed that the monarchy will stay on as a powerless entity until the constituent assembly decides its fate.

Today's meeting will focus on restructuring the state mechanism, the citizenship certificate issue, interim constitution, status of the monarchy, procedure for holding constituent assembly elections, among others, Mahato said.

Yesterday's meeting was positive as it helped to increase understanding between the two sides, he added.

Talks between the government and Maoist leadership, which began in the capital Sunday, will resume today.
