Lebanon Says Israel Will Complete Withdrawal Sunday

30 September 2006

Lebanese authorities say U.N. peacekeepers have told them that Israel will withdraw all of its remaining troops in southern Lebanon by Sunday.

Officials in Beirut say U.N. commander Major General Alain Pellegrini told Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora of the plans late Friday.

Officials for the U.N. force did not comment on the reported withdrawal.

Israeli military officials said troops were to hand over control of additional territory in southern Lebanon to U.N. forces on Sunday. But they did not say when the withdrawal would be complete.

Israel has been gradually pulling out from Lebanon since a truce was signed in August to end the month-long war with Hezbollah guerrillas.

Meanwhile, Israel's infrastructure minister, Binyamin Ben Eliezer, said Israel should, in his words, "liquidate" Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
