CHINA LAKE, Calif. (NNS) -- Reserve Explosive Ordnance Mobile Unit (EODMU) 17 held a disestablishment ceremony at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. Sept. 23rd.
Homeported in Whidbey Island, Wash.,EODMU 17, was absorbed into EODMU 11, an active-duty unit also from Whidbey Island.
EODMU 17 was a stand alone reserve unit, and would train their Reservists and attach to deploying active-duty units.
“Now Reservists will train alongside active-duty members they will support overseas, making training more consistent,” said Lt. Cmdr. Leonard Lyon, EODMU 17 commanding officer. “Plus, the Reservists and active duty will get to know each other during the training cycle and drill weekends, doing wonders for camaraderie.”
The disestablishment of EODMU 17 is part of the Total Force Concept where active and reserve forces are viewed as a single unit when considering how to best meet national security requirements. This policy moves more military assets to reserve components, with the goal of maximizing capability and minimizing costs during peacetime, and reducing the time needed for the reserves to mobilize in support of military operations during wartime and other events.
