VLADIVOSTOK, Russia (NNS) -- USS Guardian (MCM 5) pulled into Vladivostok, Russia, Sept. 18 for a scheduled port visit. The ship moored alongside USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) in Russia’s largest naval base in the Far East.

During their stay in Vladivostok, the ship’s approximately 90 crew members will have a chance to participate in sporting matches, cultural exchanges and community relations events with the local population.

“Guardian’s visit to Vladivostok is indicative of the growing strategic partnership between our two countries and builds upon the U.S. Navy’s continuing engagement with, and growing friendship with, our counterparts in the Russian navy,” said Guardian Commanding Officer, Lt. Cmdr. Steven H. DeMoss.

Guardian last visited here in July 2005 and conducted a mine countermeasures passing exercise (PASSEX) with the Russian navy, along with fellow Sasebo minesweeper USS Patriot (MCM 7).

Guardian is a mine countermeasures ship forward-deployed to Sasebo, Japan. Guardian serves under Task Force 76, which serves as the Seventh Fleet’s Mine Countermeasures arm in forward-deployed operations.
