Army General Nominated to be International Security Assistance Force Commander in Afghanistan

The Secretary of Defense announced Sept. 21 that the President has nominated Gen. Dan K. McNeill for reappointment to the grade of general with assignment as Commander, International Security Assistance Force, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Afghanistan. McNeill is currently serving as Commanding General, U.S. Army Forces Command, Fort McPherson, Georgia.

"I am honored to be nominated by the President for assignment as the Commander, International Security Assistance Force and, if confirmed by the Senate, I look forward to continuing to serve the Army and our great nation once again in Afghanistan," said McNeill after the announcement.

McNeill’s reappointment to the grade of general and nomination to the position as Commander ISAF requires Senate confirmation.

Currently the commanding general of Forces Command, McNeill began his Army career in 1968 as an infantry officer. His past assignments include Deputy Commanding General /Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Forces Command, Fort McPherson, Ga., Commanding General, XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, NC to include duty as Commanding General, Combined Joint Task Force -180, OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM, Afghanistan; Commanding General, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg NC; Deputy Commanding General, I Corps and Fort Lewis, Fort Lewis, WA; Chief of Staff, XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, Fort Bragg, NC; Assistant Division Commander, 2nd Infantry Division, Eighth United States Army, Korea; Assistant Chief of Staff G-3, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, NC, including duty in UPHOLD DEMOCRACY, G3 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC, to include duty in OPERATION JUST CAUSE, Panama and OPERATION DESERT SHIELD/STORM, Saudi Arabia; Commander, 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg NC.



McNeill’s military education includes the United States Army War College, National War College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses. He holds a baccalaureate from North Carolina State University in forestry.

The United Nations Security Council established the International Security Assistance Force on December 20, 2001 with the signing of United Nation Security Council Resolution (UNCSR) 1386. ISAF’s mission is to assist the Afghanistan Transitional Authority in creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment in Kabul and its surrounding area; afterwards, UNSCR 1510 authorized the expansion of the ISAF mandate throughout the western and northern regions of Afghanistan. In October 2003, ISAF was authorized to operate beyond Kabul in the form of Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRTs) and on temporary deployments.
