BAE Systems Delivers 2,000th Common Digital Transponder
20 Sep 2006 | Ref. 261/2006
GREENLAWN, N.Y. -- BAE Systems recently delivered its 2,000th Common Identification Friend or Foe Digital Transponder, a system that identifies aircraft and ships as belonging to friendly or neutral forces. Commonly known as the Common Transponder, the AN/APX-118 is an identification friend or foe digital transponder that replaces outdated technology with digital technology to improve the reliability and maintainability of aging MK XII IFF systems.
The common transponder currently is in use by the U.S. Navy and Army on submarines, surface ships, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. In addition to friend-or-foe identification, the system also facilitates safe operation of military aircraft in civilian airspace.
"The men and women of the Navy rely on the dependability and effectiveness of this system," said Capt. Barbara Bell, Navy combat identification program manager. BAE Systems, through its commitment to this program, is enabling the war fighter to fly a mission, fly it safely, and return home alive.
BAE Systems was awarded the first transponder contract in 2001 and has received multiple production orders from Department of Defense customers, allied governments, and prime contractors totaling more than $140 million. Production orders for the system are expected to continue for the next decade.
