CAIRNS, Australia (NNS) -- USS Salvor (ARS 52) made a port visit Aug. 31-Sept. 6 to Cairns, Australia, in tropical North Queensland, the first stop there for Salvor.

Commanded by Lt. Cmdr. Colby Howard, Salvor traveled through 530 miles of the Great Barrier Reef to arrive in Cairns.

“Our crew has worked exceptionally hard in all aspects of our diving and salvage mission to make this a very successful deployment, and we have greatly enjoyed Cairns before making the transit home,” said Howard.

For the crew, the port marked a truly unique opportunity and is a perfect example of how the Navy affords its Sailors a chance to see the world and experience other cultures, said Senior
Enlisted Advisor, Senior Chief Master Diver (MOV/OSW/SW) Michael Moser. Sailors said they enjoyed tasting local cuisines at Cairns’ restaurants, shopping, and enjoying recreational tours and activities.

Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class Lee Heinrich said Australia fulfilled a lifetime desire.

“I’ve been looking forward to Australia so that I can surf the waves that I’ve always been dreaming about,” he said.

Salvor (ARS 52) is stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and is returning from a four-month deployment to Southeast Asia as part of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2006.
