Iraq's Kirkuk Hit by Suicide Truck Bomb, Other Blasts

17 September 2006

Iraqi police say a suicide truck bomb in the northern city of Kirkuk has killed at least 18 people and wounded 55 others. The attack was one of a series of deadly bomb blasts in the city Sunday.

Iraqi officials say a gunman in the truck fired at civilians before the vehicle exploded outside a police center.

Authorities say at least five other bombs exploded in Kirkuk. Two of the bombs targeted police patrols. At least six more people were killed.

To the south in Baghdad, police recovered 24 more bodies of Iraqis tortured and killed by sectarian death squads. Almost 200 bodies have been found around the capital since Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military announced that a sailor attached to the Marines has died from combat wounds sustained in Anbar province, west of Baghdad.

The military also said that U.S. and Iraqi troops, combing the town of Diwaniya, south of the Iraqi capital have arrested more than 30 suspected terrorists.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki appealed again Saturday for Iraqis to set aside their differences and embrace the national reconciliation plan he unveiled in June.
