10 Iraqis Killed in Iraq Attacks

14 September 2006

Iraqi authorities say two car bombings in Baghdad have killed at least 10 people and wounded dozens more.

The attacks apparently targeted police, and several policemen were among the victims.

Also Thursday, security forces in Baghdad found the bodies of 20 more men, apparently victims of sectarian violence.

Iraq's Interior Ministry said security forces have killed a top aide to al-Qaida in Iraq leader, Abu Ayyub al-Masri. The dead militant is identified as Abu Jaafar al-Liby.

And security officials say another top al-Qaida official has been arrested.

In other news, the U.S. military announced that two more American soldiers were killed south of Baghdad. One died of gunshot wounds and the other when a roadside bomb hit his vehicle.

On Wednesday, police said they found more than 60 dead bodies in and around the capital. The men had been tortured and shot execution style.

Meanwhile, more Kurdish witnesses testified Thursday in the trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and six co-defendants accused of ordering the killing of tens of thousands of Kurds in the 1980s.

One witness told the court in Baghdad that Saddam shouted him down when he pleaded for the release of family members after the military crackdown, known as the Anfal campaign.

In earlier court sessions, several Kurdish witnesses said the remains of relatives who disappeared during the Anfal operations were found in mass graves years later.
