SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- More than 60 Reserve Sailors from the Naval Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG) provided base camp and logistics support to exercise Seahawk 2006, the first major West Coast training event for components of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) Aug. 16-31.

The expeditionary logisticians set up the base camp in a simulated foreign country, and had to provide full combat support to more than 900 Sailors taking part in the exercise.

“We support the troops,” said Lt. j.g. Tarlene Davis, NAVELSG’s executive officer. “We bring them everything they need for their mission to run properly. So we provide the galley, the barber shop, the ship’s store, maintenance, fuels and laundry, everything they need to stand a camp up, that’s what we provide.”

Five days prior to the kickoff of Seahawk 2006, NAVELSG Sailors from Amphibious Construction Battalion 1, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, Calif., set up the forward operating base, which had 80 berthing tents and various support tents.

With operations going around the clock, NAVELSG culinary specialists provided hot meals for breakfast, dinner and midnight rations. This task was made easier by new equipment NECC provided the unit.

“We are testing a galley prototype that has yet to be released to the fleet,” said Culinary Specialist 1st Class Kyndra White. “This is only the second time it has been used out in the field, and it’s totally self-sufficient. It’s equipped with a scullery, refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, grills, hot boxes and ovens.”

NAVELSG’s mission is to support port and air cargo handling missions, customs inspections, ordnance reporting and handling and civil affairs in an expeditionary environment.

“We are a cargo handling battalion with 13 different units, and we all do the same thing,” said Davis. “What’s great about Seahawk 2006 is that we have the opportunity to have expeditionary training right here in San Diego.”

Seahawk 2006 is a combined force protection and antiterrorism exercise designed to demonstrate and test the harbor defense, coastal warfare and expeditionary support capabilities of 19 NECC commands. Seahawk participants included Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 3; Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron 5; Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Units 103, 110, and 501; Inshore Boat Units 13, 51, and 52; Amphibious Construction Battalion 1; and components of the NAVELSG.
