MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) -- USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) returned to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility Aug. 28, following nearly two months of operations with U.S. 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific.
Enterprise, the flagship of Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 12, and Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 2, along with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, will conduct maritime security operations and fly missions in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom as part of U.S. 5th Fleet while in the region.
"Our Sailors and Marines have spent countless hours preparing for this deployment - training, standing watches and conducting combat flight operations," said Rear Adm. Ray Spicer, commander, Carrier Strike Group 12. "Enterprise Strike Group stands ready to answer the call."
Coalition maritime forces continue to conduct maritime security operations (MSO) in the region to set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. The focus of MSO is to prevent international terrorist organizations from using the maritime environment as a venue from which to launch attacks, move people, weapons or other material.
