Rheinmetall to modernize the German combat training centre
08/28/2006
In August 2006, the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) awarded Rheinmetall Defence Electronics a contract for the regeneration of the data processing equipment at the German Army's GÜZ combat training centre in Letzlingen. Because commercial products were used extensively when the GÜZ equipment was originally implemented, and considering that the state of development is that of about 1997, the corresponding regenerative requirement has now arisen for the systems technology in the combat training centre. The order has a total value of several million euros.
Rheinmetall Defence Electronics was able to assert itself in the Europe-wide bidding competition, finally winning the entire contract, comprising 7 work packages which had been put out to tender separately.
The great challenge of the order lies in the requirement posed by the customer that normal exercises must be able to continue as planned, undisturbed by the regeneration work. Only in the summer breaks and at year-ends will the existing systems be switched off. At these times, the new technology packages will be commissioned and tested in conjunction with the other subsystems and segments that are not to be regenerated.
Our company will in particular be responsible for the renewal of the Data Unit, the Audio/Video Unit, the Operator/Controller (O/C) Radio Unit, and the GÜZ data communication system (TETRA standard) as well as for the integration of the tactical radio system. In addition, the communication network, the control technology of the communication centre, and the O/C laptop will also be renewed.
These activities will also include the compilation and delivery of planning and test documents as well as the complete user documentation and the corresponding training documents.
The combat training centre in Letzlingen is the primary training facility of the German Army. The training of the combat troops under near-operational conditions – with the original weapon systems in terrain (using laser direct-fire weapons effect simulators, i.e. no live rounds) and including all the supporting elements of other service branches – is carried out there in joint operations. In addition, the final backup training of the operational contingents for participation in international peace-keeping missions as well as the certification of the NATO Response Force (NRF) formations also take place in the GÜZ combat training centre. In the transformation process of the Bundeswehr, the combat training centre is used as a testing environment for networked command and control within the scope of CD&E (Concept Development and Experimentation).
