BAGAMOYO, Tanzania (NNS) -- A team of Tanzanian Peoples’ Defense Force (TPDF), U.S. military medics and engineers began a series of humanitarian civil action programs here Aug. 14 that include providing medical care and refurbishing a dispensary.

The humanitarian projects are part of Exercise Natural Fire 2006 (NF 06), a 10-day multilateral exercise involving approximately 1,000 military personnel from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and the United States. The exercise is occurring simultaneously in each of the East African Community nations.

“It’s great to be able to make a difference,” said Marine Corps Master Sgt. Dean Hoskins, an engineer from the 6th Engineering Support Battalion (ESB). “We’ve got some great Marines here, and it’s our first time to work in Africa. They’ve got nothing but great things to say about this opportunity.”

During the first two medical civil action programs (MEDCAPs) in Kiwangwa and Fukiyosi, nearly 1,500 local people were treated by TPDF and U.S. doctors. A steady flow of patients received preventative medications and multi-vitamins, as well as counseling and education on health care.

In an unexpected event, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Gabriel Rodriguez with the 6th ESB, helped deliver a baby at the Msata Clinic.

“I arrived right on time to catch the baby and unwrap the (umbilical) cord from around her neck,” Rodriguez said. “It’s been a privilege to be able to work here, and the opportunity to help out has been a great experience.”

“I am so grateful and very happy to see the work that is being completed here,” said Mama Maloungoo, Msata District executive secretary. “This project is solidifying the relationship between the American and Tanzanian people.”
