Bush Says U.S. Working To Implement Resolution on Lebanon

19 August 2006

Welcomes prospect of restored government control over all of Lebanon

Washington –- President Bush told the American public the U.N. Security Council resolution ending the violence in Lebanon creates “a foundation for a sustainable peace,” and the United States is working with the international community to help implement it.

Speaking August 19 in his weekly radio address, Bush said the “robust international force” for which the resolution calls will help Lebanese armed forces restore the democratic central government’s authority over the whole country and prevent the Hezbollah group from being able to operate as “a state within a state.”

“The resolution will help make it possible for civilians in both Lebanon and Israel to return home in safety and begin rebuilding their lives without fear of renewed violence and terror,” Bush said.

The president said the recent conflict is part of the broader struggle in the region between “freedom and terror,” as terrorists and their sponsors seeking to promote a radical agenda “recognize that the Middle East is at a pivotal moment in its history,” exemplified by the development of young democracies in Iraq and Lebanon.

“It is no coincidence that two nations that are building free societies in the heart of the Middle East, Lebanon and Iraq, are also the scenes of the most violent terrorist activity.  We will defeat the terrorists by strengthening young democracies across the broader Middle East,” Bush said.

An audio link of the president’s radio address is available on the White House Web site, as is the transcript of the address.
