At Least 47 Killed in Baghdad
13 August 2006
Iraqi officials say at least 47 people have been killed and 148 wounded in a series of rocket and bomb attacks in Baghdad Sunday.
They say five back-to-back explosions - involving several rockets, a car bomb and a suicide bomber on a motorcycle - brought down two buildings in the mainly-Shi'ite Zafraniyah neighborhood of the capital.
Earlier in the day, U.S. and Iraqi troops searched the Health Ministry in Baghdad following a tip that kidnappers where holding Iraqi citizens there. The U.S. military says no victims were found, but five people were detained for further questioning.
In a separate raid, Iraqi security forces detained 16 people they say planned to kill relatives of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
The U.S. military says it captured an insurgent leader officials say was behind the July 17 attack on a market in Mahmoudiya that killed at least 50 people.
In other developments, insurgents killed the commander of a security force that guards Iraq's oil infrastructure near Tikrit. And the governor of Mosul escaped an assassination attempt.
