Russia expects parties to honor UN ceasefire resolution-ministry

RIA Novosti

12/08/2006 14:55 MOSCOW, August 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia expects all parties concerned to observe a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Lebanon, the Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted the resolution Friday that calls for an end to the fighting between Israel and Hizbollah and demands the withdrawal of Israel troops from south Lebanon.

"Russia's initiative on a humanitarian ceasefire helped reach a consensus around the resolution at the Security Council. Its adoption is the first step toward overcoming this acute crisis," the ministry said.

"We hope that all parties concerned will undeviatingly observe this resolution of the UN Security Council," it said.

Russia's Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said Friday the Russian delegation had decided to initiate a three-day "humanitarian ceasefire" as no consensus had been reached on a resolution drafted by France and the United States on ending hostilities or principles of a sustainable political settlement.

He said there was no rivalry and that if the Americans and the French proposed a more fundamental draft resolution, Russia would give way.

The main stumbling block in the original French-U.S. draft resolution on the armed conflict, which broke out July 12, was that it contained no provision on the pullout of Israel troops from southern Lebanon.
