PERTH, Australia (NNS) -- USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), the Navy’s oldest active-duty warship, along with embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, USS Cowpens (CG 63) and USS Russell (DDG 59), arrived here Aug. 10 for the third port visit of the ship’s summer underway period.

More than 5,300 Sailors from the Kitty Hawk Strike Group will visit Perth, all of them eager to take advantage of the local attractions. Sailors say they are looking forward to tasting local cuisines at Perth’s restaurants, shopping at retail businesses and enjoying recreational tours and activities.

Some of the activities Sailors will enjoy during their liberty include visiting many of the local beaches and viewing some of the local wildlife, such as koala bears and kangaroos, while participating in the many tours offered by Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR).

“Perth will give our Sailors the chance to join in friendship and goodwill activities, such as community service projects,” said Capt. Ed McNamee, Kitty Hawk’s commanding officer. “On top of that, this port visit will give them a chance to get some well deserved rest and relaxation.”

“Visiting cities such as Perth gives the crew the opportunity to explore different parts of this fascinating country,” said McNamee. “The friendship that exists between our two countries and the Sailors of our two naval forces is reinforced by the hospitality shown to us by the people of Perth.”

Kitty Hawk has been under way since June 8, conducting exercises in the Western Pacific area of responsibility. After leaving the ship’s second port visit of Singapore, Kitty Hawk joined the Royal Australian navy to work together to practice in joint warfighting scenarios.

The Kitty Hawk Strike Group is composed of the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, CVW-5, the guided-missile cruisers USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) and Cowpens, and Destroyer Squadron 15.
