Bombs in Baghdad Kill 19 at Market, Bus Station

08 August 2006

Iraqi police say multiple bomb attacks in Baghdad killed at least 19 people Tuesday and wounded scores of others.

In the deadliest attack, two bombs exploded minutes apart at the main market in central Baghdad, killing 10 people and wounding 69.

Officials also say three roadside bombings during the morning rush hour killed nine people and wounded eight.

One of the earlier blasts went off near a busy bus station in central Baghdad; the other two bombs targeted police patrols in the capital.

In a separate incident, police say gunmen stormed a bank in the north of the capital, killing five people before walking away with $4,000 in cash.

The U.S. military has boosted forces in Baghdad by about 3,700 troops this week to help Iraqi forces stop a deadly wave of insurgent and sectarian violence.

U.S. and Iraqi forces raided a Shi'ite militia stronghold in Baghdad before dawn Monday, sparking a gun battle with militants in which at least three people died. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki criticized the raid later, saying it undermined government efforts to promote national reconciliation.

Separately, the U.S. military reported that an American soldier has died of wounds suffered Sunday in western Iraq's Anbar province. No further details were released.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
