MOSCOW, July 28 (RIA Novosti) - A warlord believed to have been involved in an attack on an army convoy in the southeast of Chechnya in early July has been killed, Russia's Interior Ministry said Friday.

Khozh Akhmet Dushayev is believed to have organized one of the most brutal attacks on federal troops and police in the troubled republic in months. Six troops were killed and 15 wounded in the attack.

Dushayev was killed in an operation conducted by Chechen commandos and federal troops last night. Adam Badayev, who led the convoy attack, was captured and is giving evidence, a ministry official said.

"The crime committed by [their] militant group on July 4 can be considered solved," the ministry said. "But efforts are being made to identify the other militants involved in the attack."

In mid-July, Russia's most wanted terrorist Shamil Basayev, who led or organized the bloodiest terrorist attacks across Russia in recent years, was killed in an explosion.

Days after Basayev's death, Russia's security chief Nikolai Patrushev and Chechen President Alu Alkhanov appealed to militants to lay down their arms and guaranteed them a fair investigation of their activities.

But only 14 militants have been reported to have surrendered in Chechnya and other North Caucasus republics with only a few days left before Patrushev's August 1 deadline.

The active phase of the anti-terrorism campaign in Chechnya is over, according to the Kremlin, but sporadic fighting continues hampering efforts to rebuild housing and infrastructure and create jobs in the republic after a decade of warfare.
