NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- A pilot program implemented July 7 at the Navy Legal Service Office (NLSO) in Naples is set to reduce their staffing from a 45-person command to 11 in an effort to grant the Judge Advocate General of the Navy more flexibility in shifting billets to support the global war on terrorism.
The move will shift responsibility of legal assistance and claims in Europe from NLSO to the Region Legal Service Office (RLSO); however, service members, government civilians, and dependents are being reassured that RLSO will be able to provide the same level of legal assistance as NLSO.
“Generally, legal assistance services will be provided from the same office spaces as they are currently,” said Lt. Cmdr. Robert Williams. “There should be minimal interruption of legal assistance and claims services.”
These actions are part of continuing efforts by Command Navy Europe and the Judge Advocate General of the Navy to grant more flexibility to shift personnel between vital legal mission areas, according to Williams. The plan will lead to an overall reduction in the total number of legal community service members, both officer and enlisted, in the Commander, Naval Forces Europe area of responsibility.
Legal assistance services include wills, powers of attorney, advice on domestic relations, consumer fraud, debt situations, and other legal matters.
