POINT LOMA, Calif. (NNS) -- Sailors from Naval Base Point Loma and Naval Base Coronado participated in the Builders Challenge Competition 2006, July 20.

Twenty people competed in five different events, including a wheel barrel run with a 240-pound load, cutting wood, driving nails, shoveling dirt and identifying tools to find the strongest and most capable competitor.

“Skill, endurance, perseverance and a lot of heart are required to compete here today,” said Chief Construction Electrician (SCW) Dave D. Masias, of the Self-Help facility division at Naval Base Point Loma.

“It’s a challenge me and my shipmates have been waiting for all year,” said Lt. j.g. Nicholas Jay Cieslak, also from Self Help, who was in charge of the competition. “It takes a lot of Seabee spirit.”

The competition started four years ago as a challenge between two Seabees. They decided to organize the event and invite more participants, explained Cieslak.

The event is organized by Seabees, but other commands can participate to win one or more of the six trophies crafted by Builder 2nd Class (SCW) Joshua Cooper, winner of last year’s competition.

“It is a very demanding competition,” said Builder 2nd Class (SCW) Curtis Burnham, from Self Help.

The overall winner was Equipment Operator 1st Class (SCW) Aaron K. Paro, Self Help Point Loma, who also took first place in the main event, the wheel barrel run.

“It was a good day, good people, good tools, good food and perfect weather," said Lt. Sam Johnson, North Island Self Help Public Works. “This is my second time [competing], and I’ll be back next year.”
