20/07/2006 16:03 MOSCOW, July 20 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has evacuated 1,407 of its nationals and citizens of former Soviet Republics from Lebanon, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

"According to the Foreign Ministry's latest information, 1,407 citizens of Russia, and Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, have been evacuated from Lebanon to Russia," a source in the ministry said.

Violence in the region has claimed more 300 lives with Israel conducting air strikes and ground operations, and radical group firing missiles at Israeli territory.

The Russian Embassy in Lebanon said earlier that Russia evacuated about 200 Commonwealth of Independent States citizens from Beirut.

Russia's envoy to Lebanon, Alexei Solomatin, said that, apart from using planes, the embassy was also trying to evacuate citizens of Belarus, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan using foreign vessels at the port in Beirut.
