USS RUSHMORE, At Sea (NNS) -- During a Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2006 amphibious warfare scenario, Southern California and Hawaii-based Marine units and Sailors aboard USS Rushmore (LSD 47) conducted an amphibious assault vehicle, sea-based raid on the beach of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, July 18.
Employing seven Marine Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAV), each with the capacity to carry more than 25 combat-equipped warriors, Marines stormed the beach, destroyed an exercise terrorist headquarters, collected intelligence and returned to the San Diego-based Rushmore in less than four hours.
“We wanted to provide an opportunity for AAVs to launch from our well deck to move Marines ashore,” said Rushmore Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Cathal S. O’Connor.
The scenario tested the Navy and Marine “Blue/Green” combat team’s versatility and provided realistic training.
“For the Marines based in Hawaii, RIMPAC provides a tremendous opportunity to operate with a naval amphibious vessel and develop their basic amphibious warfighting skills so they are prepared for real-world missions,” explained O’Connor.
According to Marine Gunnery Sgt. John Duncan of Woodland, Calif., both senior and junior Marines benefited from the exercise.
“Many of the junior Marines haven’t had the chance to take part in amphibious ops, and it’s a great opportunity for the senior Marines to take charge and make sure the operations go smoothly,” said Duncan.
The dock transport ship Rushmore and multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) are currently steaming with the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force as a part of the bilateral force off the coast of the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. RIMPAC, the world's largest biennial maritime exercise, has brought together the military forces of the United States, Republic of Korea, Japan, Australia, Canada, Chile, Peru and the United Kingdom.
