USS BONHOMME RICHARD, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) Sailors and Special Marine Air/Ground Task Force Marines from southern California and Hawaii-based units conducted a helicopter raid exercise July 16.
This operational exercise was conducted on the Hawaiian island of Oahu during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2006 exercise, the largest biennial maritime exercise in the world.
The objective behind the exercise was to give Marines the chance to enter a country and take the enemy forces by surprise in a real-time scenario.
The Marines were directed to assault a simulated terrorist training camp in which terrorists were training with small arms, explosives and vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices.
Marine Capt. Clint Collins, 42 assault flight leader under training, flew one of the six CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters that took the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 362 to Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
“The purpose of this training was to move Marines and deploy them to shore for combat training,” Collins said. “They did a good job for their first go around as a Helo Company and completed their objective.”
Bonhomme Richard is currently sailing with other U.S. and Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force ships as part of the Bilateral Forces of RIMPAC.
