PANAMA CITY, Panama (NNS) -- Sailors from USS John L. Hall (FFG 32) volunteered their time and talent June 13 at Hogar Malambo, an orphanage which cares for children through their teen years and has been operating here since 1890.

Thirty-one Sailors from the ship volunteered at Hogar Malambo by painting one of the dormitory buildings that houses more than 20 young children, including three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, dining room and living room. The crew easily finished the project in a few hours. With so many volunteers, they were able to take on more jobs such as organizing storerooms, yard work and painting old furniture.

“At the end of the day, everything we have done is extremely worthwhile," Storekeeper 2nd Class Brandon Ervin said. "We had the chance to come out here and help people who really need our support.”

The local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars also helped the project by providing drinks and lunch for the crew.

The crew also took time to play with the children during breaks, and the children were very excited to have Sailors shower them with treats and attention.

“This is a precious age, when the children are angels," Jim Gusweiler, the Navy College Program for Afloat education instructor aboard the ship said. "I am so glad to have this opportunity to be of service to those in need.”

John L. Hall is currently deployed in support of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command on a counter narcoterrorism mission in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific Ocean. The ship deployed from Mayport, Fla., at the end of April and is expected to remain on patrol in to the fall of this year.
