SEOUL (NNS) -- During his three-day visit to the Republic of Korea, Commander of the Pacific Fleet, Adm. Gary Roughead, spoke with Sailors stationed at the only naval base on the peninsula, Commander, Fleet Activities Chinhae (CFAC) July 11.
Roughead talked about changes in the Navy and what Sailors can expect in the future regarding naval and wartime readiness. The admiral added that his visit to CFAC was not only to speak with Sailors, but to see the status of forces for that military installation, as well as the rest of Korea.
He was also interested in touring the installation and seeing its combat readiness and capabilities. In addition , he was curious to learn about the Morale, Welfare and Recreation program offered there, which he thought was very impressive.
After his speech, and a question and answer period, was an awards ceremony. He presented Lt. Richard Jones the officer in charge of the supply department there, with the Navy Commedation Award; Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Sarah Calvert, a watch commander for the Security Department, with the Navy Achievement Award; and Construction Mechanic 1st Class (SCW) Kenneth Wernau, the transportation director for the Public Works Department, with a $1,000 scholarship to the University of Maryland University College.
“Admiral Roughead’s visit to Chinhae was a great experience," said Seaman Caleb L. Burney, administrative clerk for CFAC. “It enabled the Sailors here to ask questions and listen to all of the current and future plans for the Navy. I felt it gave a boost to the overall morale of CFAC to have a distinguished visitor tour our base and compliment the job that we all are doing here.”
In conclusion, the admiral wanted Sailors stationed there to keep in mind that their tour here would be one that they would look back on in great appreciation and that only a limited amount of Sailors in the Navy will ever get the opportunity to experience a place like Korea.
