USS CARNEY, At Sea (NNS) -- Ships assigned to Destroyer Squadron 40 completed a highly successful multinational submarine and surface ship exercise with the Peruvian and Spanish navies in Peruvian coastal waters, July 12-14.
Known as Silent Forces Exercise (SIFOREX), this year's event included USS Halyburton (FFG 40), USS Carney (DDG 64), and an SH-60B from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) (HSL) 44 Detachment (Det) 5.
“SIFOREX is a bi-annual exercise that allows the United States Navy a unique opportunity for our anti-submarine warfare teams to operate against a very skilled submarine force, but also the chance to operate against multiple submarines in a complex environment,” said Capt. Randy Snyder, commander, Destroyer Squadron 40. “Carney, Halyburton, and HSL 44 Det 5 each performed superbly in SIFOREX. All the units are excellent ambassadors for the Navy as we continue to expand our interoperability with the navies of South America.”
Designed as an exercise that enables surface ships to hone their Anti-Submarine Warfare skills, SIFOREX afforded U.S. Sailors the rare opportunity to practice against real-world diesel submarines. The exercise also included surface ships from the Peruvian and Spanish navies. Carney embarked two Peruvian officers, Lt. Jose Jayo and Lt. j.g. Fernando Ordonez, who served as liaisons and helped with the language barriers.
“The multinational exercise is enforcing the bonds between the U.S. and Peruvian navies,” commented Ordonez, “not only operationally, but also in the interchange of knowledge, cooperation, and culture, as I’ve seen during my stay on board USS Carney as a foreign ship rider.”
SIFOREX is part of Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command's (NAVSO) ongoing efforts to improve theater security cooperation and interoperability between partner nations in the region.
Carney and Halyburton began their deployment in support of NAVSO at the end of June and will continue with various operations and exercises through the summer.
