EADS and INDRA join forces in Identification Systems

* Latest IFF technology avoids fratricide in military missions
* Indispensable for air traffic control in civilian airspace

London, 19 July 2006

EADS Defence Electronics, and the leading Spanish IT and Defence company Indra, Madrid, join forces to offer a common portfolio products based on the latest technologies suited for reliable identification of air, ground and sea vehicles in a multi-national or asymmetric environment.

As reported by both companies during the Farnborough Airshow, EADS and Indra have agreed on the joint marketing of a comprehensive set of interrogators, transponders and combined interrogator-transponders necessary for the Identification Friend or For (IFF) process, i.e. the automatic identification of aircraft and vehicles in a certain area. This joint product portfolio is covering the whole range of military and civilian IFF procedures, such as Mode SIF, Mode S and Mode 5.

"Due to the increasing complexity of operational situations and scenarios, on the surface or in the air, identification today is a vital issue for military deployments of all kinds", explained Bernhard Gerwert, CEO of EADS Defence Electronics. "To avoid fratricide is a key issue for all levels of armed forces in autonomous operations or, even more, in joint NATO or UN engagements.."

Joaquín Uguet, Indra´s COO added, "Indra and EADS will merge their advanced technology in the latest NATO standards of identification and cryptographic systems. Thanks to this agreement, customers will choose out from a comprehensive product portfolio and will be able to obtain very cost-effective and powerful solutions that match their needs related to identification".

Modern identification systems automatically exchange flight path data between civil and military aircraft flying in a certain airspace, thus establishing an overall air situation picture and avoiding collisions in congested airspace. In military applications, IFF systems are utilizing in addition highly sophisticated encryption techniques in order to reliably identify own and other friendly forces. Yet, this also ensures the safety of civilian vehicles of all kinds and their passengers.

EADS Defence Electronics and Indra are two major leaders in the IFF market. E.g., EADS is responsible for the equipment of the German armed forces with about 1,000 next-generation IFF systems.

Indra has gained itself a position as leader supplier of identification systems to the Spanish Armed Forces and, in the international market, Indra has become a reference for this type of systems
