Israel Pounds Lebanon for Seventh Day

18 July 2006

Israeli warplanes are pounding Lebanon for a seventh straight day, as Hezbollah rockets continue to hit northern Israel.

The Israeli strikes hit several targets in Lebanon, including an army camp near Beirut where Lebanese military officials say at least 11 soldiers were killed.

Israeli aircraft also hit other targets in northern and southern Lebanon as well as a southern suburb of Beirut, which is a Hezbollah stronghold.

Witnesses say at least six people died when a bomb hit a house in a village near the town of Bint Jbeil close to the Israeli border.

In Israel's third largest city Haifa, medical sources say there were no injuries from Tuesday's barrage of Hezbollah rockets.

Major General Udi Adam, a top Israeli military officer, said Tuesday that fewer Hezbollah rockets are reaching Israel.

Israel's deputy military chief of staff Major Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky says Israel will complete its military objectives in Lebanon "in a matter of weeks." He says the possibility of a ground offensive has not been ruled out, but is not being planned at this time.

So far, more than 225 Lebanese and 24 Israelis have died in fighting that erupted after Hezbollah guerrillas abducted two Israeli soldiers during a cross-border raid on July 12.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
