Russian evacuation from Lebanon slated for July 19

RIA Novosti

18/07/2006 13:30 MOSCOW, July 18 (RIA Novosti) - Most Russians will leave Lebanon, which has been bombed by Israel since last week, on July 19, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

"A thousand people will travel to the Lebanese-Syrian border, further on via Syria to the international airport in Latakia," the ministry said. "There they will take a Russian Emergency Situations Ministry plane to Moscow."

About 200 people have been killed in Lebanon in six days of Israeli missile and air strikes, while more than 20 Israelis have been killed in attacks mounted by militant group Hizbollah.

The Russian Embassy in Beirut said earlier it planned to evacuate 1,500 people adding that embassy officials had coordinated routes with Israeli authorities, which had promised to stop military operations in the area during the evacuation.

A group of Russians has already left the Palestinian Authority, which has also been subject to Israeli military action, and arrived safely in Moscow. Thirty-six people touched down in Moscow Tuesday morning in an Emergency Situations Ministry plane.
