INGLESIDE, Texas (NNS) -- A change of command ceremony for Mine Countermeasures Squadron (MCMRON) 3 was held a Naval Station Ingleside’s Base Fitness Center, July 7.

Rear Adm. Deborah A. Loewer presided as command transferred from retiring Capt. Jonathan F. Tobias to Capt. Kevin Tokarick.

“His tour has been spectacular,” Loewer remarked of Tobias. “Under his leadership, MCMRON 3 has spearheaded the most challenging of endeavors.”

Tobias assumed command as Commander, Mine Countermeasures Squadron(COMCMRON) 3 in August 2004, one of three operational mine warfare squadrons in the U.S. Navy arsenal. COMCMRON 3 is an expeditionary, tactical staff in operational command of U.S. and multinational surface, airborne, and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) mine countermeasure forces in U.S. 2nd, 5th, and 6th Fleets, as well as the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) and U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) areas of responsibility.

“He maintained an operational tempo and schedule that resulted in major improvement in the execution of surveys, operations, strategic plans and exercises,” Loewer added.

While commanding COMCMRON 3, he was the coalition mine countermeasures commander for Task Group 21.3 in support of Joint Task Force Katrina survey operations.

“We were able to achieve the accomplishments, not due to my leadership,” Tobias stated, “but due to the outstanding performance, dedication and perseverance displayed by my staff.”

Tobias will retire and transition into a career in the government consulting and technology services industry.

“I would like to welcome Capt. Tokarick and his wife to South Texas. I hope you get an opportunity to enjoy the openness and warmth of our community,” Loewer said.

Tokarick, a native of Auburn, Pa., graduated from the University of Rochester, N.Y., and its NROTC Program with a Bachelor's degree in Geology in May 1984.

"It’s an honor and a privilege to be given this opportunity of working with the Navy’s finest MCM staff,” Tokarick said. “It’s time to start writing the next chapters for the command.”

Most recently, Tokarick served on the staff of commander, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 2, Little Creek, Va., as chief staff officer.
