Nasrallah: Hezbollah Continues to Respond to Israeli Military Strikes

16 July 2006

Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah has vowed to continue attacks on Israel, following a rocket strike that killed eight people at an Israeli railroad station.

In a televised address Sunday, Nasrallah said Hezbollah fighters are responding to Israeli military strikes that have killed more than 100 people in Lebanon.

Hospital officials in southern Lebanon said 10 people died in Israeli airstrikes today.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned of "far reaching consequences" after the rocket attack on Haifa, about 30 kilometers from the Lebanese border.

It was the deadliest attack in Israel since the start of its offensive against Hezbollah, which captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid last Wednesday. Twenty Israelis have died in the violence.

Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz Sunday said forces will continue attacking the sources of rocket fire in Lebanon, including those in residential areas. He added that Israel does not want to reoccupy Lebanon.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora has appealed to the United Nations to broker an immediate ceasefire.

Israel is demanding that Hezbollah guerrillas are disarmed and the captured Israeli soldiers are released.
