PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- The San Diego-based multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (BHR) (LHD 6) pulled into Pearl Harbor Naval Station in late June for a 10-day liberty port visit in support of the 2006 Rim of the Pacific exercise (RIMPAC), the largest biennial maritime exercise in the world.
While in port, BHR Sailors and Marines enjoyed the sites and base facilities as well as tours and sporting activities offered through the Moral, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program.
Photographer’s Mate 2nd Class (AW) Jacob Hollingsworth, 28, of Shreveport, La., participated in a MWR-sponsored, best ball golf tournament at the Mamala Bay Golf Course on Hickam Air Force Base.
“Playing in the tournament was a learning and very humbling experience, considering wind and condition of the greens,” said Hollingsworth.
The Gators, BHR’s softball team, led by captain and coach Chief Crytologic Technician (Collections) (SW) William Vermillion, won the competition against 35 other teams. The Gators played in five games over the four-day tournament, giving up a total of only eight runs to opposing teams.
“I would definitely attribute our success during the tournament to excellent defense and timely hitting,” said Vermillion. “We have a great group of unselfish guys and gals with awesome team chemistry.”
Vermillion anticipates that the team will only improve.
Pfc. Sawn Semenske, an embarked Marine, enjoyed his first port call in Hawaii by using the facilities on base.
“I got to hang out with my friends at the E-club and other places on base,” said Semenske.
BHR also hosted Gilad of the Fit TV show, Bodies in Motion. BHR Sailors participated in the filming of the Gilad work out video on the flight deck.
"Taping our Bodies In Motion video on the Bonhomme Richard was an experience of a lifetime. It was my first time aboard a Navy ship of this magnitude and it was an honor to meet the crew and officers," said Gilad Janklowicz, producer and host of Bodies In Motion.
"Having served in the military for four years, I can't emphasize enough the importance of physical fitness to the well being of our armed forces. I wish the U.S. Navy and all our military all the best and may the lord be with you all."
