Twelve soldiers and four Tamil rebels were killed in fresh violence in Sri Lanka's restive eastern province Friday as nationalists demanded the arrest of an ailing Tiger spokesman undergoing treatment in Colombo.

The soldiers were killed when the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fired 81-mm mortars at them in the Maduru Oya area, PTI report said here quoting defence sources.

He said five others were wounded in the attack while four Tigers were killed in a counter attack.

In a neighboring area, navy sailors fired mortar bombs at Tiger positions after a sailor was killed by a Tiger sniper on the Muttur jetty, the official said.

Meanwhile, about 50 members of an ultra nationalist group Friday demanded the arrest of Tamil Tiger media coordinator Velayudam Dayanidi who is better known as Daya Master, while he underwent treatment for a heart ailment.

The National Movement Against Terrorism (NMAT) denounced the government of President Mahinda Rajapakse for providing security to Dayanidi at the Apollo hospital here.

In another development, the government said two Claymore mines were found and defused in the central town of Kady last night.
