FORT WORTH, Texas (NNS) -- Center for Naval Leadership (CNL) South facilitated its first Work Center Supervisor Leadership (WSCL) Class May 7 at Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Fort Worth.

Chief Yeoman (AW) Crystal Nunnally and Chief Electronics Technician (ETC) Darlene Smith, master training specialist, facilitated the class of 14 Sailors.

“In a facilitated class, the successful outcome is only as good as the input from the participants,” said Nunnally. “The co-facilitator's role is to act as a guide rather than as an instructor or lecturer,” continued Nunnally. “From my perspective and that of my co-facilitator, ETC Smith, our inaugural class was a hit!”

Nunnally said part of the course requirements are completing online courses on Navy Knowledge Online, as well as a 3-minute presentation on pre-assigned topics, such as Navy history or traditions. Students are encouraged to use visual aids and handouts.

“The goal of the brief is to get our work center supervisors comfortable with the idea of presenting in front of an audience,” said Nunnally. “Students were enthusiastic and put enormous effort into the classroom instruction.”

Senior Chief Engineman (SW) Ron Ebert, facilitator at CNL-South, said courses were revised and improved to include modernized leadership philosophies and new teaching methods to create greater interaction and cross-teaching among peer Sailors.

CNL-South, also known as CENNALEAD-South, is one of eight Centers for Naval Leadership (CNL) units across the country providing leadership training to Sailors.

“What we're doing is brand new," said Capt. G. Mark Hardy, commanding officer of CNL Headquarters. "The Navy Reserve created eight new units and 200 new billets for us at a time when it was undergoing significant downsizing as a result of the zero-based review (ZBR).”

“With 200 nationwide billets, the CENNALEAD stand-up was the largest new (Navy) Reserve component command created in over 20 years,” said Ebert.

The goal of these Navy Reserve units is to deliver the right leadership training to every Sailor at the right time.

“The idea is to utilize qualified and talented [Navy] Reserve component personnel to provide facilitation to meet the goals of providing just-in- time ('JIT') or 'as needed' training,” said Ebert.

"We want to try to meet the needs of the NOSCs and our Sailors. Our typical class has between 16-22 students, but that average is rising as word-of-mouth spreads and as we transition into the phase where the appropriate course will be a mandatory requirement for advancement,” continued Ebert.

According to CNL-Headquarters there are currently 169 facilitators in 46 locations assigned to one of the eight units. CNL-South has 23 personnel: 19 E-6 through E-9 and four officers including Capt. Ron Woods, commanding officer, Cmdr. Scott Evans, executive officer and Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Cassandra Stokes, senior enlisted leader.

CNL-South is the second largest unit for personnel/facilitators next to Region Southeast and has the largest geographic coverage of all of the CNL units. CNL-South facilitates in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska and New Mexico with plans to include Austin, Texas, Wichita, Kan. and Springfield, Mo., in fiscal year 2007.
