ATK Awarded Technology Demonstration Contract for U.S. Army Precision Guidance Kit

Award Strengthens ATK'S Position as a Leading Provider of Precision Projectiles

Jul 10, 2006

MINNEAPOLIS, July 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK), an industry leader in the development of next-generation precision projectiles, has received one of two Technology Demonstration (TD) contracts from the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) to develop a Precision Guidance Kit (PGK) for the Army's 155mm Howitzer. PGK will make the stockpile of existing artillery ammunition significantly more effective at relatively low cost by adding GPS guidance and navigation capability in a package that fits into the fuze well of an existing 155mm round.

The six-month technology demonstration phase of the program will be followed by a down-select to one design that will proceed with a System Development and Demonstration (SDD) award. ATK and its industry team, which includes Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL) and Draper Labs, have designed a PGK solution it believes offers the U.S. Army the most accurate, lowest cost-per-kill of any design in the competition.

"ATK is the industry leader in the design and development of gun-launched precision projectiles that must perform in high g-force environments," said Jack Cronin, President, ATK Mission Systems. "Our PGK solution, featuring a highly effective fixed canard guidance approach, gun-hardened electronics, self-generated power, and a minimum number of moving parts, not only meets but exceeds requirements for accuracy, effectiveness, range, and cost."

ATK is a $3.4 billion advanced weapon and space systems company employing approximately 15,000 people in 22 states. News and information can be found on the Internet at http://www.atk.com/ .
