USS LASSEN, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Lassen (DDG 82) Sailors demonstrated their commitment to professionalism and safety June 21 by completing a nighttime UNREP with USNS Tippecanoe (T-AO 199) as part of Valiant Shield.
Other ships of the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) Carrier Strike Group (CSG), including Kitty Hawk herself, also participated in the UNREP, as one of Valiant Shield’s objectives was to exercise the ability to sustain and operate three CSGs.
“This is what we do. It’s more dangerous at night, but that is why we have the best Sailors in 7th Fleet," said Chief Boatswain’s Mate (SW) Curtis L. Smith. "They know their business, they look out for each other, and they are committed to a safe evolution every time.”
The UNREP was also an excellent opportunity for training.
During an UNREP, every Sailor, from the newly trained seaman to the most experienced officer of the deck, is crucial to the safety and success of the evolution, especially during the “breakaway.”
The breakaway is the final portion of an UNREP when the two ships maneuver away from one another. During an UNREP, ships are close together, so crews must remain attentive throughout the evolution.
Lassen is assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15 and operates out of Yokosuka, Japan. To learn more about Valiant Shield, visit the Web site at www.pacom.mil.
