SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) returned to Naval Base San Diego July 6 after a six-month deployment with USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 7.

Lake Champlain was a part of Reagan’s maiden deployment to the Persian Gulf and the Western Pacific Ocean. While underway, Lake Champlain supported operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and participated in various maritime security operations.

“This CSG has made a significant, positive contribution to military operations during this deployment by ensuring safe passage of ships in the Persian Gulf, and working with other countries to ensure the peace and stability of their surrounding waters,” said Rear Adm. Michael H. Miller, commander of CSG 7.

Lake Champlain also participated in Valiant Shield 2006. Valiant Shield was a major military exercise involving three carrier strike groups testing the military ability to focus on enhancing joint combat skills and interoperability.

In the Persian Gulf, Lake Champlain preformed security patrols at Iraqi oil terminals as apart of Commander, Task Force 158.

“During our time in the Persian Gulf, we were able to work with the Iraqi navy and take part in training with them,” said Capt. Donald Roane Jr., commanding officer of Lake Champlain.

Lake Champlain families are also proud of the work the ship did.

“My wife and I sent my son e-mails and care packages all the time, but it’s nice to have him back home,” said Ron Ransdell, the father of Electronics Technician 3rd Class Isaiah Ransdell.

Isaiah Ransdell said, “I can’t wait to spend some time with my family and relax.”

CSG 7 included USS McCampbell (DDG 85), USS Decatur(DDG 73), USNS Rainier (AOE 7), USS Tucson (SSN 770), Destroyer Squadron 7 and Carrier Air Wing 14.
