SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell (DDG 85) returned to Naval Base San Diego after a six-month deployment with the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 7, July 6.
CSG 7 deployed to the Persian Gulf and Western Pacific Ocean in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom to conduct maritime security operations, and participate in various joint and coalition exercises.
“It was something very special, to be a part of the Ronald Reagan deployment,” said Cmdr. Vincent D. McBeth, commanding officer of McCampbell. “Ronald Reagan was a wonderful president that stood for peace and perseverance, which is what this strike group stood for and strived for, as well.”
McCampbell conducted maritime security operations under the direction of Combined Task Force 58, which is responsible for the security of Iraqi oil terminals Al Basra and Khawr Al Amaya.
McCampbell also participated in four community relations projects in Bahrain, Hong Kong, The Maldives and Singapore.
“We accomplished a lot on this deployment, and I feel really proud to have been apart of it,” said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Michael S. Woods.
McCampbell also participated in exercise Valiant Shield June 19-23, which tested the military’s ability to rapidly bring joint forces together in response to any crises worldwide.
“The deployment was awesome,” said Seaman Apprentice Aaron Puttmann. “I got to see some different countries, serve my own country and have a good time.”
