Sri Lankan Tigers are accusing Sri Lanka's government of launching an insincere attempt to appear serious about peace by creating a committee that will advise the government on how to boost autonomy in Tamil areas.
The government initiated a step towards addressing demands of the Tamil separatist movement, which has again brought the country to the brink of war, by unveiling a committee to advise it on giving more autonomy to Tamil-majority areas, Doordarshan News reported here on Thursday.
The 12-member power sharing committee comprising of Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims will have its first meeting on coming Tuesday with President Mahinda Rajapakse.
However, the Tigers cannot support the initiative because it fears it will include no rewriting of the country's constitution and that the government's call for talks on the plan appeared aiming at foreign governments.
"Colombo's call for talks based on Sri Lankan constitution, rejected by Tamils decades ago, is a deliberate act of deceiving the international community," the pro-rebel political leader S P Thamilselvan said.
Thamilselvan said that in case Sri Lanka's president was genuinely interested in advancing the peace process he should take steps to stop civilian killings allegedly by government-backed fighters, and ensure that Tamil areas get essential relief supplies uninterrupted.
