Swedish Army Advanced Mortar Contract for BAE Systems

06 Jul 2006 | Ref. 171/2006

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has awarded a contract for the development and production of two prototype armoured advanced mortar systems (AMOS) to BAE Systems Hägglunds AB. The SEK 500 million order (approx US$70 million) includes options for maintenance systems, ammunition and preparations for a new battlefield management system.

The two prototypes will be delivered to the Swedish customer in early 2011.

The announcement underlines the success of a government and industry partnership between Sweden and Finland, which began in the late 1990’s. It follows a similar order from the government of Finland in 2003, with delivery of two AMOS systems from BAE Systems Hägglunds and its Finnish partner Patria Weapon Systems, beginning in March of this year.

“AMOS offers its operators a unique and efficient advanced mortar system with a twin-barrel concept which gives a high rate of fire,” states Sven Kagevall, BAE Systems Hägglunds president. “Selection by the Swedish Army confirms the success of our 10 year Nordic partnership with Patria Weapon systems. I am extremely optimistic about the export potential of this new advanced mortar
system.”

The AMOS system can be mounted on a variety of land-based and marine platforms and is well suited for international peacekeeping duties, even when operating in an urban environment.

In Sweden, AMOS will initially be integrated onto a CV90 platform, but it will also be suitable for SEP, the next-generation Swedish armoured vehicle system.

BAE Systems is one of the world’s leading design, manufacture and support providers of land and armament systems. It is the world’s second largest global land systems business with operations in the United States, United Kingdom, South Africa, India and Turkey in addition to Sweden.
