The Sri Lanka Government Peace Secretariat Palitha Kohona has said the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)'s demand to remove European Union (EU) monitors from the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) "is an agony to Norway as well as the European Union."

The Sri Lankan government and LTTE had mutually agreed on the composition of the SLMM.

"Therefore, any change in the process also should be mutually acceptable, Colombo Page reported from Colombo quoting Kohona.

Referring to LTTE violations at the beginning of the ceasefire agreement and the recent assassination of Army Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Parami Kulatunga, Kohona added, "Now the Tigers are targeting high profile personalities."

He also said Sri Lanka is waiting for Norway's response on the talks between five Nordic nations being held Friday in Oslo on the future of the ceasefire monitors.

The LTTE's request came after the EU decided to list the LTTE as a foreign terrorist organization.

The non-EU members of the SLMM, Norway and Iceland, have said they cannot fill the ranks of the SLMM on their own.
