EADS marks break-through on US defence market
* EADS North America and Eurocopter to supply UH-145 helicopter to support military operations
* First major win for EADS as a prime contractor for the US military
* Significant progress for transatlantic defence cooperation
Amsterdam, 30 June 2006
The selection of EADS to provide the US Army's next-generation Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) marks the Group's break-through on the US defence market. For the very first time, the Group's subsidiary EADS North America will act as a prime contractor for the US military. The LUH requirement is for up to 352 aircraft, with a total value of approximately US$ 3 billion.
"This success confirms EADS as a respected partner on the US defence market and strongly supports two of our long-term strategic goals:
To balance our portfolio by enhancing our defence business in key international markets and to participate in these markets through local investments and industrial partnerships," stated EADS CEOs Tom Enders and Noël Forgeard. "Programmes such as the UH-145 clearly demonstrate that transatlantic defence cooperation is a win-win situation for all parties."
EADS North America leads a UH-145 team of companies that includes four primary partners, among them its American Eurocopter business unit, which will handle the helicopter’s production, assembly and delivery and Sikorsky Aircraft as well as WestWind Technologies and CAE USA. Production of the UH-145 – a version of Eurocopter’s EC145 multi-mission helicopter – will be set up in the US.
EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. The EADS Group includes the aircraft manufacturer Airbus, the world's largest helicopter supplier Eurocopter and the joint venture MBDA, the leading international missile producer in the global market. EADS is the major partner in the Eurofighter consortium, is the prime contractor for the Ariane launcher, develops the A400M military transport aircraft and is the largest industrial partner for the European satellite navigation system Galileo.
