SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Commander, Airborne Command, Control and Logistics Wing (COMACCLOGWING) Capt. John W. Covell awarded Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30 the Battle ‘E’ plaque for most battle-efficient carrier logistics squadron in the Navy for 2005 June 8.
The Battle ‘E’ is awarded to the carrier logistics squadron with superior performance, efficiency, and readiness.
“VRC-30 winning the Battle ‘E’ is indicative of our superior commitment to maintaining overall fleet combat readiness during this critical time in our nation’s history,” said Lt. Cmdr. Rod Hoyle, former squadron Operations Officer.
Covell said he coveted unit awards more than personal citations, because they reflected the accomplishments of an entire unit working together as a team instead of a lone individual.
VRC-30 flew more than 4,700 hours in 2005, supporting tsunami relief efforts, the global war on terrorism, and numerous other operations and exercises. Additionally, VRC-30 aircraft provided an unprecedented “night catapult” in order to medevac a shipmate in need.
VRC-30 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Pete Nette attributed this award to the teamwork and professionalism displayed within the squadron. “The quality of people and their willingness to work together are the key factors in maintaining operational readiness,” he said.
Nette ascribed the success of the squadron to the morale and command climate. Programs within the squadron such as picnics, mock Physical Fitness Assessments (PFA), and sports days give Sailors a chance to unwind and are a change from the daily operational grind. These programs, in addition to the professional development of Sailors, provide the foundation for success, he said.
“There is a noticeable improvement in squadron morale due to the recognition of our squadron’s accomplishments. Winning the Battle ‘E’ means we’re the best,” said Aviation Electrician's Mate 3rd Class Brandon Gould.
According to VRC-30 Executive Officer Cmdr. Drew Basden, “While each detachment may have its own personality, we have a great team acting as one. There is a reason we are called ‘The Providers’ – we’re good at it.”
The Battle ‘E’ award was presented to James in a ceremony held in the hangar bay in front of the squadron.
