NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Cmdr. Christopher L. Harkins relieved Cmdr. Mark E. Davis as commanding officer of the fast-attack submarine USS Montpelier (SSN 765), during a change of command ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk, June 23.

Before turning over command to Harkins, Davis, who assumed command of Montpelier in Feb. 2004, gave thanks to his hard working crew.

“The true heroes are the 150 men who stand before us,” said Davis. “They are the greatest crew I’ve ever seen. I wish time offered me the opportunity to talk about each and every one of them.”

After assuming command, Harkins wished Davis the best of luck on his next assignment as the commanding officer of the Pre-Commissioning Unit North Carolina (SSN 777), and promised to build upon the great foundation Davis left behind.

“I am up to the challenge of taking this great ship up to the next level,” said Harkins. “I am honored to be your captain, and I look forward to serving alongside you.”

Harkins served as executive officer aboard the fast-attack submarine USS Scranton (SSN 756) until 2001.

Harkins then served as the Force Nuclear Power Officer on the staff of Commander, Naval Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Va., from Feb. 2003 through Aug. 2005.

He subsequently completed the Submarine Command Course before taking command of Montpelier.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Harkins graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Systems Engineering in 1988. In 2005, Harkins earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Auburn University.

Harkins' decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards), and the Naval Unity Commendation.
